Piloting drones is the stuff dreams are made of (at least for me). However, most drone pilots often face two significant problems.

First, full-sized drones take up a lot of space when transporting. And second, any full-sized drone would take between 6-7 hours for a full charge.

This makes it pretty inconvenient for hikers like me, who like to take trips along remote trails, and need our drones to document the journey. Thankfully, there’s a solution to this problem in the form of mini drones, which are often small enough to fit in your pocket.

As with everything, the real trouble lies in choosing the right mini-drone for your needs. And today I’m here to help you out with just that.

Hi everyone! I’m Dhia, and today I’m here to answer all your queries regarding the best mini-drones in the market.

So fasten your seatbelts, and let’s take off!

TL;DR: Don’t want to go through the entire thing, and looking for a short cut? Well, here’s the lowdown on the topic.

For a premium, complete drone experience, go with the DJI Mavic Air that offers excellent features. Or you can also choose to settle with the DJI Tello, which is more affordable and packs rich features.

For mid-range buys, I urge you to take a look at the Eachine E58 and Potensic A30W models. These can give you most of the required features, and at a price that’s sure to fit your budget.

Finally, if you’re looking for entirely entry-level products, then check out the JJRC H36 Mini or Holy Stone HS170 models. Though low on features, they do offer excellent bang for your buck.

6 Best Mini Drones

Best Premium Mini Drones

As always, I’ve segmented my selections according to the price, with the costliest first. So if you want to skip to the more affordable versions, you’re welcome to do so. Here are the premium picks among mini drones, in my opinion.

  1. DJI Mavic Air

To start, I want to take you all on a ride in the DJI Mavic Air, one of the best mini drones I’ve ever come across. The device is small enough to carry in my backpack, yet doesn’t compromise on any of the desired features.

My Experience

I first used this model on my trip to the Himalayas, and the experience was stunning (both scenery and drone operation). The device comes equipped with a 3-axis gimbal camera that provides steady aerial shots.

What’s more, the product features advanced HDR algorithms that take stunning photos and stitch them together to create immersive spherical panoramas. It even has support for 1080p slow-motion video recording.

But enough about the camera, let’s take a look at the other features of this stunning product. The drone is elegantly designed and incorporates the latest engineering techniques to protect the sensitive parts during flight. Along with that, the 3D-foldable design takes the portability of this device to a whole new level.

With 8GB of internal storage, I don’t have to worry about running out of memory for my photos and videos. And the best part? All this comes with a sleek, futuristic look that simply takes the cake for me.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Honestly, there’s nothing that I could find to be faulty with this product. The only point of concern might be the price, which is indeed rather steep. But considering the returns you are likely to get, I’d say this is well worth the investment.

Pros:

  • Elegant and aerodynamic design
  • High-quality camera
  • ActiveTrack feature
  • 8GB of internal memory

Cons:

  • Rather expensive price tag
  1. DJI Tello

If the last product was for the pros, then this one is the best for those just starting in the drone game. With fantastic features and an easy to use interface, this is one of the best devices out there for kids and novices.

My Experience

The first thing that I would like to confess: this is seriously a fun device. Primarily meant for kids and teens, this device is compatible with Scratch, a visual programming language, which can help newbies learn the basics of coding.

But apart from that, adults can also have a lot of fun with the device. The cameras on this little beast are great, and even if you don’t know how to fly a drone, you can capture stunning images using the EZ shot technology.

I’ve flown a lot of drones in my time, and let me tell you, this lightweight and durable device packs a lot of power under the hood. Powered by DJI technology and with an intel processor, the Tello has twin antennas that make video transmission a breeze.

What’s more, you don’t even need a controller to fly the thing! Just toss it into the air and control using the smartphone interface. How cool is that!

What Could’ve Been Better?

The only thing I’m a little disappointed with is the flight time. At just thirteen minutes, it seems a little too short for such an excellent (and fun) device. But I guess you just can’t have everything.

Pros:

  • DJI flight technology
  • Compatible with VR headsets
  • Lightweight yet durable design
  • Dedicated app

Cons:

  • Low flight time

Best Mid-Range Mini Drones

Now we’re going to take a look at the best mid-range mini drones for sale. And if you’re still looking for more affordable options, then skip these two and go on to the last pair. Don’t worry; I wouldn’t mind!

  1. Eachine E58

As my readers already know, I’m a stickler for camera quality. And for a mid-range mini drone, this product offers stunning visual capabilities. With a 720p HD camera and 120-degree wide-angle adjustable lens, this is one of the good ones.

My Experience

This is the device I used for my live video documentary along the Appalachian Trail. And I must say the drone has given me more than good results. The real-time FPV system can connect with any smartphone and stream live views of the beauty, above and below.

If you are still not convinced, I urge you to take a look at the compact and foldable design of the model. This makes it perfect for backpacking and long hikes. I personally like to keep this one as a backup to my Mavic air, just in case.

Apart from that, the device comes with other nifty features such as headless and altitude-hold modes, one-key takeoff and landing, and replaceable drone arms. And in this price range, you really can’t ask for more.

What Could’ve Been Better?

I would’ve appreciated it if the product had packed some basic onboard tertiary memory for storing pictures and videos. Since it doesn’t, I had to spend on a micro-SD card. Other than that, this is a pretty cool device at this price.

Pros:

  • High-quality HD camera
  • 3D flip and one key return
  • Multiple flight modes
  • Dedicated customer service

Cons:

  • No on-board storage
  1. Potensic A30W

Feature-packed, easy to fly, and with a great camera, the Potensic A30W has the potential to be the best birthday gift for any kid. And I think curious adults who want to try out their hand at drone piloting can also glean hours of fun from this little wonder.

My Experience

As for me, I really had a great time flying the A30W, and I’m glad I can share my findings so that you can experience it as well. The camera on this device is an HD one, which means you can take high-quality FPV live videos and pictures while zooming along the clouds.

What’s more, the drone even has an altitude hold mode for taking clear shots. The dedicated app allows you to control the drone from the comfort of your smartphone, and gravity sensors make sure that it follows every tilt of the phone.

The device manufacturers have paid particular attention to the durability of the device. Also, keeping safety in mind, the propellers are encircled by guards that ensure the device doesn’t face any damage.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Honestly speaking, there’s nothing wrong with the product as such, though I am a little skeptical about flying this model at high altitudes. The wind might just steal it away. But from such a low-cost device, you can’t expect more, can you?

Pros:

  • Single key operation
  • HD camera with wifi transmission
  • Gravity sensor control
  • Full body protection

Cons:

  • Not suitable for windy weather

Budget Mini Drones

Whoa! You made it here finally. Now we’re going to take a look at the best budget mini drones. Don’t expect much from these devices, you say? Well, you might just be in for a pleasant surprise.

  1. JJRC H36 Mini

Though it looks like a toy (which it is), this is a capable device that has all the flight capabilities a beginner could ask for. Easy to control and operate, this 2.4G 6-axis quadcopter boasts of a multifunction design that can make heads turn.

My Experience

After playing around with this baby, I can confidently say that it fulfills all the requirements of a basic mini drone. Small, compact, and powerful, the device comes with an easy to use remote that anyone can operate.

This model uses a throw-and-fly technology and comes with a headless mode that enables novices to get used to piloting the device. It took me some time to get used to the controls of this model, but once I got it, there was no turning back.

I was particularly impressed by the circular propeller guards that protect the drone from damage. Not that there’s much chance of that since the entire product is made from anti-crash ABS material.

What Could’ve Been Better?

My only peeve point with this product is that it doesn’t come with a camera… I know, I know! I shouldn’t expect this for so modest a price. But hey, it doesn’t hurt to hope that future iterations of the device will feature one, does it?

Pros:

  • Fast charging times
  • Single-key return function
  • Multi-speed operation
  • 3D flips and rolls

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have a camera
  1. Holy Stone HS170

And you’ve arrived at the final product. The HS170 from Holy Stone is a mini drone that’s worth including in any list and is suitable for drone pilots of any level. And at such a modest price, this is one device that you can certainly give a try.

My Experience

Futuristic in appearance and of durable quality, this is a drone that is perfect as a gift. The device uses a headless flight system to make the operation more relaxed, and is wind resistant as well. Which is a surprise at this price.

The 6-axis gyro stabilization enables effortless in-the-air stunts, and the ultra-responsive motors make the device extra special. Other than that, I’d like to mention that as the device weighs less than half a pound, it doesn’t require FAA registration.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Apart from the fact that it doesn’t have a camera (well, duh!), the only other fault I could find with this device was the battery compartment, which seems to have a faulty design. But if you can look past that, there’s no better product in this price range.

Pros:

  • 6-axis gyro technology
  • Multiple speed modes
  • Bright and colorful LED indicators
  • Semi-circular propeller guards

Cons:

  • No camera
  • Battery compartment shoddily designed

DJI Mavic Mini

For the next item on the list, I’d like to introduce you to the DJI Mavic Mini, one of the best mini drones in its price range. Equipped with a 2.7K camera and 3-axis gimbal, this quadcopter can fulfill all your daily FlyCam needs, and more. Just check it out below!

My Experience

DJI needs no introduction for drone aficionados, but to be frank, I didn’t expect much of a performance from such a small model. At just 250 g, the Mavic Mini is lighter than many smartphone models in the market.

But how very wrong I was! The aerial shots that this device gave me were just stunning, to say the least. I should thank the 3-axis motorized gimbal for keeping the camera stable during my aerial adventures.

With multiple QuickShot modes like Dronie, Circle, and Helix, I was able to take stunning shots that dazzle with professional perfection. Plus, the device even records impeccable videos.

But for me, though the camera enthusiast that I am, the highlight of this product is the battery. As this device is so very light, I was able to glean over 30 minutes of flight time on a full charge. At this price, this is simply brilliant performance!

What Could’ve Been Better?

It would be a crime to expect more from a product this swell, but I would have loved it if the app for the drone were compatible with all smartphone models. Currently, the updated app works only for select smartphones. This is a letdown if you ask me.

Pros:

  • Lightweight build
  • Extended flight times
  • Professional-grade camera
  • Comes with spare propellers

Cons:

  • App not compatible with all smartphone models

Final Words

Flying a drone is a sleek hobby, and if you are new to this game, then I urge you to begin with one of these mini drones. They are light, affordable and offer excellent value for money. And above all, they’re fun to fly!

And with that, I’ll take my leave.

Cya, and happy piloting!
